Fish prices hit record high as catch drops

Source: The Peninsula, Qatar, August 19, 2014 - 2:08:36 am

DOHA: Prices of popular varieties of fish, especially hamour, have gone through the roof this summer.

The prices of hamour, the most sought-after item by sea food lovers, have hit QR100 per kg in the retail market, which according to market sources is a record high.

Due to poor catch, fish prices always go up during summer. But this time, prices are phenomenally high. The prices of hamour have never gone beyond the QR85-QR90 range, market insiders told this daily yesterday.

According to the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, over 200,000 people, including Qataris and expatriates, are out of the country. It shows that the prices of fish have gone up at a time when there is lower consumption.

Poor catch, coupled with alleged market manipulation, are the twin reasons cited by sources for the high prices. The difference in retail and wholesale prices ranges between QR10 and QR20 per kg compared to the prices prevailing in the Central Market (Qatar’s wholesale market), a local Arabic daily said.

For example, hamour, whose prices during normal seasons fluctuate in the range of QR40-QR65, is available at QR80 a kg in the wholesale market. However, it is being sold at QR100 at some retail outlets and hypermarkets, meaning an  additional profit of 25 percent (QR20 per kg).

Another popular fish, kanaat, is available at just QR40 a kg in the Central Market, but is being sold at QR70 per kg by retailers.

Customers wonder why prices are so high in retail market when there is no shortage in supplies of most varieties of fish, and they are readily available in adequate quantities in the wholesale market.

Some traders argue that the hike in the prices is due to the decline in supplies of hamour due to low catchments (since the fish has a tendency to go deep down into the water during summer months). Those not able to afford hamour at the prevailing prices are compelled to buy substitutes such as samman, safi, and zubaidi, pushing the demand and prices of other varieties.

Given the skyrocketing prices, customers urge authorities, including the Consumer Protection Department, to ensure effective monitoring of fish prices.

Some have raised concerns about the auctioning of fish in the Central Market being allegedly influenced by some middlemen and big traders.

Traders argue that with the approaching summer, the supply of hamour and some other varieties of fish has declined and, therefore, prices of other varieties have also gone up due to substitution effect.

Traders at Central Market say they are working on marginal profit which is sufficient enough to recover the wages of workers, rentals of shops and electricity and water bills.

In contrast, many fishermen have expressed apprehension and complain that some big traders, with the connivance of middlemen and others,  are working to influence the auctioning of fish and prices.

However, traders rubbished such allegations and said the auctioning of fish takes place under the close watch of authorities so there is no possibility of price manipulation.

Time to get hooked on sustainable seafood

Supplies fast running out so traders, retailers need to tackle issue: Experts

Melissa Lin Strait Times 29 Oct 13;

SINGAPOREANS consume 140,000 tonnes of seafood a year but they may soon have to change their eating habits.

Traders and retailers in Singapore were yesterday urged to buy from sustainable fisheries or farms, after being told that supplies were "fast running out".

About 75 people from the fisheries industry attended Singapore's first Sustainable Seafood Business Forum, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

WWF Singapore chief executive Elaine Tan, in a media statement, said 87 per cent of the world's fisheries are fully or overexploited.

Participants at the forum at Shangri-La Hotel shared their ideas on how to tackle the problem.

Sustainable fishing practices include catching only a certain quota so enough fish are left to breed.

Singapore imports more than 90 per cent of its fish for domestic consumption. Most of this comes from the Coral Triangle, which covers the seas of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Next year, WWF Singapore and the MSC will host a festival from June 8 to 15 featuring sustainable seafood. This is to raise awareness among consumers about the range of sustainable seafood products available here.

MSC, a global non-profit organisation that sets the standards for sustainable fisheries, runs a certification and eco-labelling programme consistent with international standards. Out of 207 MSC-certified fisheries, only one - Vietnam - is from Asia .

It is not known how many food establishments here get their seafood supplies from such sources.

But at yesterday's forum, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts was mentioned as an example of a business that serves responsibly harvested seafood. The Hong Kong-based chain stopped selling shark's fin, bluefin tuna and Chilean sea bass at its 81 hotels worldwide last year as part of its sustainable seafood policy.

However, some companies told The Straits Times that they face challenges such as the higher price of sustainable seafood and difficulties in finding suppliers.

Mrs Amanda Phan, 31, started casual western bistro Grub at Bishan Park with three friends in May. For their menu, they referred to WWF's Seafood Guide, which recommends sustainable seafood choices.

"We had to do extensive research before finding a suitable supplier," she said. "It took about six months to research, source for suppliers and plan the menu with the sustainable seafood options."

The price of the hake used for the bistro's fish burger is also 20 per cent to 40 per cent more expensive than non-sustainable types of fish, she added.

High Fresh Trading director Hong Ying Lien said she is working with the MSC to ensure her sources practise sustainable methods. Her company supplies mud crabs to hotels, supermarkets and restaurants such as Long Beach and No Signboard Seafood.

Her company imports about two tonnes of crabs from India and Indonesia each day. She said: "We'll take it step by step and start by giving our clients a choice to pick the sustainable options."

SEAFOOD SERVICES AUSTRALIA CLOSES ITS DOORS

 MEDIA RELEASE

 22 July 2013

Seafood Services Australia (SSA) today announces that it will cease trading and close its doors.  This decision has only been arrived at after long and serious consideration by the Board and its members.

Over the past five years there has been a significant reduction in the availability of funding for all primary production industries. This has impacted on SSA’s future revenue stream and played a significant role in the SSA Board’s decision to put in place the processes to deregister the company while still in a position to ensure current commitments and obligations are met.

Under these circumstances the goal of the SSA Board has been to leave a strong legacy for the seafood industry and its stakeholders. It has put in place a process to transition remaining projects and intellectual assets to an organisation that will see them completed and available in the future.

There are four FRDC funded projects which the SSA Board is “returning” to the FRDC:

2013/023    Develop a draft Australian Standard for Responsible Fishing on vessels to improve public perception of the commercial fishing industry

2012/209    Develop and promote the Australian Fish Names Standard (AS-SSA 5300) and ensure reaccreditation as a Standards Development Organisation

2012/211    Securing Trade & Market Access for the Australian Seafood Industry

2012/500   Establishing and operating a forum (Common Language Group) for the Australian seafood industry and its stakeholders to reach agreement on sustainability issues contentious in the fishing and aquaculture sectors.

The FRDC has committed to finding alternative project management arrangements such that these projects remain active and outputs available to stakeholders.

Additionally there are other services that SSA has delivered in the past which are unlikely to be continued due to the apparent lack of organisations with capability or funding to fill the role. These past services include managing the Seafood Incident Response Plan, providing technical advice to Codex and other trade forums.

SSA was established in 2001 by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the Australian seafood industry as a non-profit organisation. SSA’s goal was to enhance the profitability, international competitiveness, sustainability and resilience of the Australian seafood industry.

It is clear that SSA has delivered a number of key achievements over the past decade – these are outlined at the end of this release. These have been made possible by SSA’s dedicated staff and its many partners.

The Board would like to acknowledge the support received from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, the Australian Seafood CRC, Seafood Experience Australia (SEA), National Aquaculture Council (NAC), Sydney Fish Market, Western Australia Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC), Aquaculture Council of Western Australia and seafood industry bodies, governments and numerous other partners over the past twelve years.

SEAFOOD SERVICES ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Over $7.316 million in investment into seafood industry development initiatives.  This represents a leverage of an additional $3.066 million over the $4.250 million invested by FRDC over this period.
  • Established and coordinated the operations of the Seafood Trade and Market Access Forum (SMAAT) to provide an inclusive and transparent mechanism to identify, prioritise and action critical trade and market access issues faced by the Australian seafood industry.
  • Established and maintained the SSA online Seafood Trade and Market Access Database, in collaboration with the Australian Seafood CRC and SARDI, to provide industry and government with up-to-date technical data and other critical information on the trade and market access requirements of Australia’s key seafood trading partners.
  • SSA has achieved and maintained its accreditation as a national Standards Development Organisation (SDO) under the stringent requirements of ABSDO and Standards Australia. SSA is currently the only SDO in Australia with seafood industry standards development capacity and one of only five SDOs in Australia.
  • Developed and maintained the Australia Fish Names Standard and Fish Names Brand Scheme as the definitive document on common and scientific names for seafood. This first seafood industry standard has resolved the confusion that previously existed over the marketing names of seafood.
  • Developed and maintained the online Fish Names Database to successfully extend the Fish Names Standard nationally and internationally. This free to access database is now utilised by the scientific community and seafood wholesalers, retailers and consumers in clarifying the marketing and scientific names of seafood.
  • SSA developed and refined the National Seafood Incident Response Plan (SIRP), providing for a more structured approach to industry responsiveness and developing easy to use documentation to be utilised in the coordination, recording and tracking of seafood incidents.
  • Under the National Seafood Industry Environmental Management Systems (EMS) program, SSA introduced, updated and continued to extend its EMS resources to those industry groups keen to develop their own environmental management system.
